SYMBOLISM AND METAPHORICS OF WAR IN THE POETRY OF YURI IZDRYK

Abstract

The article determines peculiarities of the author’s perception of the concept of war in the poetry collections "Calendar of Love" (2015), "After Prose" (2022), "Lazy and Tender" (2024) by Yuriy Izdryk. The paper studies the way the metaphors and symbols of war and military vocabulary are implementated in the intimate, philosophical, and civic lyrics of the author. It ttraces both the diversification of the concept of "war" and the change in its perception depending on the context. In particular, in the frameworks of the intimate lyrics the relationship between the concepts of "war" and "love" come into focus, while in philosophical lyrics the understanding of the thesis "war is a cosmic game" comes to the fore.The paper pays special attention to the way the metaphor of war plays out in the civil lyrics of Yuriy Izdryk , where, in fact, there is a sharp decrease in the use of vocabulary and symbolism related to military themes. Instead, it is in civil lyrics where there appears the concept of war as an unjust and all-consuming force of chaos. Since the collections include poetry from different periods, one cannot talk about the diachronic comparison and evolution of the metaphor of war in the poetic work of Yuriy Izdryk .
